Desta French first landed on these pages with her smart, forward-thinking debut track, 'Take You For Dead', a few months ago. We were struck by that song's effortlessness, and it's the same story second time around as French steps out again on 'Like No Other'. Spanish guitars - French is apparently half-Colombian herself - blow breezily across a backdrop of swelling synths and pulsating electronic drums, as French sighs longingly, "You do things to me like no other lover." Although 'Like No Other' is a song full of desire and fantasy, there's something very grounded about the way French goes about her songwriting - it's not hugely progressive but all the elements are arranged beautifully and with authority. Keep your eyes on this one, she may just go on to write a classic. - DC
